Good Samaritans rescue motorway kitten

September 19, 2023

Driving home one evening, Dave McDonnell saw a man directing cars to slow down in the 90km/hour zone and pulled over to help. Ben MacKerras had been driving along that stretch a few minutes earlier, when a small ball of fur that turned out to be a kitten caught his eye.

Later nicknamed Rocky, the tiny feline ran toward oncoming traffic before leaping into the undercarriage of Dave’s ute. With hazard lights flashing, the two men drove in slow convoy to a side street in Hindmarsh. Rocky would not be lured out, so Dave went above and beyond to protect the kitten, spending the night in his car.

Around 5am, Rocky emerged and fled into a locked Telstra property. Dave waited until 8.30am when workers turned up and helped him catch her.

Transferred into the safe hands of RSPCA rescue officer Soraya, Rocky was soon with our Lonsdale vet team – and Dave was finally on his way home.

Rocky was slightly injured during her ordeal but made a full recovery in foster care – made possible by your kindness.

In the kind of joyful outcome we want for all our animals, Rocky now lives happily with Dave, his partner, Beth, and their other RSPCA rescue cat, Leo.

Did you know our dedicated rescue team is entirely funded by community donations? It’s only thanks to our supporters that we can keep our Animal Ambulances on the road, and be there when animals need us most. Learn more here.
