Left with an untreated dislocated hip as a puppy, this sweet girl is now a much-loved ‘foster fail’

June 12, 2020

Poor Misty was left to suffer a badly dislocated hip for a week before she was surrendered to one of our inspectors for much-needed treatment.

For several days, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier X couldn’t even bear weight on her right hind leg.

Sadly, this happened to Misty while she was still a puppy. At only 5 months old, she’d already had to endure so much pain.

But an outpouring of generosity and support meant it wouldn’t be forever.

Misty’s recovery is made possible by generous South Aussies

When Misty came into our care, she limped in pain. But luckily, it wasn’t too late.

The brave pup was immediately seen by our dedicated veterinarians, where x-rays revealed that her hip was dislocated. Our team of vets carefully realigned her hipbone and placed her on a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and pain relief.

Misty would soon be able to walk pain free again, but in the meantime she needed to be closely monitored.

Dedicated foster carer and RSPCA Dog Team Coordinator, Kadi, took Misty under her wing while she recovered – and our charity reached out for assistance to cover the costs of her ongoing treatment.

It was heartwarming to see the response to our call for help. So many South Australians were committed to helping Misty on her road to recovery and very generously funded the costs of her care.

Soon enough, the sweet little girl started to feel a whole lot better.

‘We got attached – we found it hard to bring her back because we knew we would miss her so much’

In the month Kadi and her partner fostered Misty and nursed her back to health, they just completely fell in love.

“Having her in foster for a long period of time, we definitely got attached,” Kadi tells us.

“When it came to the point where she was ready for adoption, we found it hard to bring her back because we knew we would miss her so much.”

And so, what started as a temporary home, turned into a forever place of love for this brave pup who had survived the worst.

So how does Misty spend her days now?

When she’s not playing with fur friend Pix – a fellow RSPCA South Australia rescue – Misty loves napping on the couch with her devoted mum Kadi, or going on walks where she can sniff anything and everything in sight.

Not to forget, ripping apart (we mean.. playing with) her toys!

It couldn’t be further from the difficult first few months she had of life, where she was denied even basic vet care.

‘A big thank you to everyone who donated to Misty’s surgery’

Having followed Misty’s journey from the beginning, Kadi wants to especially thank those who made her current life possible.

“A big thank you to everyone who donated to Misty’s surgery,” she says.

“For such a little girl to have as big a surgery as she did, she’s doing so well today. You wouldn’t even know she had a bad leg as she now loves to run about so much!”

We couldn’t be more thrilled for both Misty and Kadi, and feel so much joy knowing that this beautiful girl will live the rest of her life with the love and happiness she deserves.

Thank you Kadi, and thank you to all our supporters.

From the bottom of our hearts, we’re so grateful to all our supporters who made Misty’s new life with Kadi a reality. If you’d like to continue helping animals just like Misty, head over here to see our current emergency appeals.
