How rescue kitten Mitzi’s unconditional love healed a broken heart

February 27, 2023

After the sad loss of two feline companions in the same month, adopter Julie said she would never open her heart to another animal – that was until Mitzi, the sweet black and white rescue kitten came along.

Julie had cared for her two darling Burmese cats, Lucy and JJ, for 16 loving years before they both sadly fell ill and passed away in May 2020. Distraught by the loss of the pair, Julie swore to herself that she would not adopt again, because she couldn’t bear to think about the pain of losing another family member.

However, as time passed, Julie eventually found herself missing the unconditional love and companionship of a furry friend. It wasn’t until many months later that Julie’s heart had finally healed enough for her to consider the idea of adopting another cat.

After searching for six long months, Julie had finally found the lucky cat that she would call her own – and it was a smoochy four-month-old kitten by the name of Mitzi.

Falling for Mitzi was love at first click

Julie explained how she will never forget the fateful day when she first spotted Mitzi on RSPCA’s adoption pages. Even before their very first in-person meeting, Julie was absolutely smitten with the Mitzi after seeing her profile online.

“I was looking for a female kitten and Mitzi just jumped out of the page – my heart melted there and then,” Julie said.

“I made the call to the Lonsdale shelter and booked a time that same day to go and visit her.”

It was with much delight that when the pair finally met face to face, Julie realised Mitzi was exactly what her broken heart needed.

“The minute I entered the room, the first one brave enough to come up and say hello was Mitzi! She stayed with me the whole visit.”

“I knew she was the one for me, we just clicked. It was love at first hug!”

Not wanting to spend another day without Mitzi in her life, Julie did not hesitate to make the adoption official.

While Julie is no stranger to caring for cats, life with Mitzi has been full of new experiences

Reflecting on her time with her beloved Burmese girls Lucy and JJ, Julie recalls days of quiet companionship with the affectionate pair, who she often found intertwined in deep slumber.

Adjusting to life with a kitten again after 16 years with her Burmese girls was a challenge, but it was one that Julie was more than ready to take on.

“I have gone overboard with toys for her,” she admitted. Mitzi certainly didn’t mind, showing a zest for life with her new favourite person.

Even from day one, Mitzi could be found sleeping snuggled up to Julie’s neck – something she still does every night, despite her much larger size.

One year on, Julie can’t imagine her life without Mitzi

Julie now has nothing but love for the little kitten that healed her broken heart.

“Mitzi is a very affectionate cat,” Julie said. “She looks at you and your heart just melts.”

Like most cats, Mitzi loves to climb on things she shouldn’t, like the lace curtains in the loungeroom. Although the curtains are a bit worse for wear, Julie is confident her curious little girl will grow out of her destructive (but cute) habits.

One of Mitzi’s quirkiest habits is when she makes her ears curl over when she cleans herself. Julie hasn’t been fast enough with her camera to catch Mitzi with both of her ears curling over, but she has managed to capture a photo with just one.

While there are so many things Julie loves about Mitzi, the best thing about her is without a doubt the unconditional love she has brought back into her home.

“Thank you for bringing us together.”
