For Sale signs up as RSPCA SA prepares to move

May 16, 2022

In a major step towards raising the $26m needed to build a new Animal Care Campus, RSPCA South Australia has put its three metropolitan properties on the market.

The listings are with Colliers International, with the sales to be on a leaseback arrangement for the next two years until the charity’s new home is built.

Announced by the State Government last November, the new RSPCA Animal Care Campus will be located on a seven-hectare site within Glenthorne National Park at O’Halloran Hill.

The Campus will include South Australia’s first wildlife hospital, in line with a key recommendation of the SA Wildlife and Habitat Bushfire Taskforce formed in the aftermath of the 2019-20 bushfires.

The three RSPCA SA properties now on the market are located at:

16 Nelson Street, Stepney (currently RSPA SA’s headquarters).

25 Meyer Rd, Lonsdale (currently RSPCA SA’s main animal shelter).

Lot 77 Meyer Rd, Lonsdale (located opposite the shelter and used to agist livestock in RSPCA SA care.

One step closer to moving into our new home

RSPCA South Australia CEO Paul Stevenson said the listings mark an important milestone towards the organisation’s relocation to the more prominent O’Hallaran Hill site, on the northwest of South Road and Majors Road.

“Our Lonsdale shelter is hidden away down a side road within an industrial zone – in 2022, it’s not the right location or good enough facilities for rescued and vulnerable animals,” Mr Stevenson said.

“The new campus is a once-in-a-generation project that will vastly improve our State’s capacity to care for animals, including South Australia’s precious native fauna.

“We will soon be seeking foundation donors who want to contribute to construction costs.

“With its expert animal-care teams and community education opportunities, this campus will lift the bar on animal welfare standards in SA for decades to come.

“There could be no better legacy for anyone passionate about animal welfare than to have your name forever associated with this game-changing, state-of-the-art facility.”

Detailing for the overall design of the Campus is now in its final stages ahead of the project going to tender for the actual build. Final plans for the site will be revealed early next month.
