SA on track to be canine capital of Australia, with third dog-friendly movie night to support RSPCA animals in need and free PetStop App about to launch

Six years after Elsa the fearless princess urged us to “let it go” she’s back, starring in Frozen II. Animal lovers can enjoy the much anticipated sequel with their pooches at a RSPCA South Australia fundraiser screening on Saturday December 14.

Timed to coincide with the first weekend of the school holidays, the special drive-in screening at Gepps Cross is the third time Wallis Cinemas has run a dog-friendly evening in support of RSPCA South Australia.

The first two, held in February and June, were hugely successful – something RSPCA South Australia spokesperson Carolyn Jones attributes to a growing trend of including dogs in our social lives.

“Anyone who owns a dog knows that sad look they have when they know you’re going out without them,” Ms Jones said.

“We’re keen for people to – whenever possible – take their dogs with them, provided of-course that they’re going places that the dog will enjoy and that the dog is temperamentally suited to,” Ms Jones said, adding that dogs should never be left unattended in cars under any circumstances, due to the high risk of heat stress.

“What most dogs like more than anything is to spend time with us, and these drive-in movie nights are perfect opportunities for the whole family, including four-legged members, to relax and be entertained – all the while raising funds to support the care of less fortunate animals.

“Almost half ($12) of the $25 per car entry free will go towards our animal rescue and care teams, including our dedicated veterinary staff.

“We’re totally dependent on donations from our community to fund this vital work, and last year we found new homes for almost 4500 animals including more than 700 dogs and puppies.”

The dog-friendly movie night is happening shortly before the pre-Christmas launch of PetStop, a free App developed by RSPCA South Australia to help dog-owners locate venues that welcome both them and their pooches.

“We’re seeing some really positive developments for the welfare of dogs in South Australia, and we applaud Wallis Cinemas for being part of it,” Ms Jones said.

“South Australia is definitely a contender for the title of dog-friendly capital of Australia.

“The health benefits of pet ownership are well proven, so the more opportunities we have to integrate animals in our lives, the better for everyone.”

As with all movies selected for RSPCA’s drive-in fundraisers, Frozen II holds particular appeal for younger viewers. Its release follows on from the phenomenal success of Walt Disney’s original Frozen film in 2013, which won two Academy Awards and was the highest grossing animated film at the time.

Set three years after the events of the first film, Frozen II follows Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven as they embark on a journey beyond their kingdom of Arendelle in order to discover the origin of Elsa’s magical powers and the truth of the kingdom’s past.

Ms Jones said dog-owners who want to bring their furbabies to the screening should be confident they have the temperament to cope with this kind of outing and to remember to bring treats, water bowls and dogpoo bags. Attendees may also like to bring picnic rugs so they can stretch out on the grassed areas.

Every car will receive a free family-size bag of popcorn and there will be hot snacks and drinks to purchase.
