11 ongoing court cases for animal cruelty this May

Monday 2 May: A woman from Adelaide’s western suburbs is facing three counts of ill-treatment of an animal in relation to a dog, found emaciated and deceased in a backyard, and a cat and a kitten found inside a unit in allegedly squalid living conditions. She is due in the Adelaide Magistrates Court next month.

Monday 2 May:  A woman and her daughter will appear in the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court in relation to their alleged neglect and underfeeding of six horses on a property in the Mid-Murray region.

Tuesday 3 May: A woman from Adelaide’s western suburbs will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with failure to mitigate harm suffered by a dog, found emaciated and deceased with a foreign object blocking its digestive tract. The woman’s former partner was given a one-month suspended prison sentence in February 2022 after pleading guilty and being convicted for the same offence.

Wednesday 4 May: A 31-year-old man is due to face cruelty charges in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court next month for allegedly forcing a female dog (that had recently given birth) to run a significant distance while riding his bike, resulting in alleged harm to the dog. The man is also alleged to have physically assaulted the dog.

Monday 9 May: The trial of a woman facing multiple charges in relation to a large dog breeding facility in SA’s Southern Mallee region continues in the Adelaide Magistrates Court. In August 2021, a second defendant pleaded guilty to charges in relation to the same facility. He was fined $8000 and prohibited from owning any dogs other than four dogs, and he was required to provide evidence that all four dogs were desexed.

Tuesday 10 May: A long-running trial has been listed for judgement in the Christies Beach Magistrates court with a male defendant from the western suburbs who is charged with failing to ensure a dog with multiple health issues received veterinary care. The elderly dog remains in RSPCA care.

Thursday 12 May: A 48-year-old woman from Adelaide’s western suburbs is due in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court to face an aggravated cruelty charge of being reckless about causing serious harm to a dog. After being seized by SA Police officers, the dog was euthanased by a vet due to its extremely emaciated condition. The woman has failed to appear at three previous court hearings and she was subsequently arrested pursuant to a warrant and placed on bail.

Thursday 12 May: A trial continues in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court involving a couple who are alleged to have ill-treated several reptiles.

Monday 23 May: A female defendant from the northern suburbs will face the Elizabeth Magistrates court on 10 charges of ill-treatment of an animal in relation to four horses and one pony found in emaciated condition and with no access to water. Three horses remain in RSPCA care, and the fourth horse was returned to its owner (who is not the defendant). The pony has been rehomed after he was surrendered by the defendant.

Tuesday 24 May: A Port Augusta couple will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court charged with ill-treatment of an animal after their dog was found wandering the streets in emaciated condition and suffering from advanced and untreatable disease. The eight-year-old male American Staffordshire Terrier cross was humanely euthanased.

Tuesday 24 May: Two female defendants from a regional town north of Adelaide will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court on cruelty charges relating to a large number of dogs, cats, native animals and birds found in poor condition and being kept in squalid conditions. The majority of the animals recovered and have now been rehomed after the defendants surrendered them.
