Jumps racing has proven to be deadly for horses and dangerous for jockeys.

A jumps racing horse is forced to clear obstacles which are at least a metre high, in a pack, at speed, and over long distances. Despite modifications to jumps and efforts to make racing safer, horses continue to fall and die at an unacceptable rate.

RSPCA  believes jumps racing will never be made safe, and should be banned on animal welfare grounds.

Take Action

As a South Australian who is passionate about preventing animal cruelty, you can make a difference and help bring an end to this cruel and unnecessary ‘sport’.

Send the following message – or a message of your own – to the racing industry contacts listed below:

I wish to express my deep concern at the continuation of jumps racing in South Australia.

The start of both the South Australian and Victorian jumps seasons have already been marred by falls and serious stumbles over obstacles in almost every jumps race staged so far, and as of May 3 we had two horses killed (one at Oakbank and one at Warrnambool). In addition, several horses have suffered career-ending injuries.

Statistics show that jumps horses are nearly 19 times more likely to be killed than horses in flat races, and this season is already providing further horrific proof of that.

Jumps racing can never be made safe enough to be acceptable on animal welfare grounds. The general public supports a ban on this cruel and unnecessary ‘sport’. Our own Racing Minister Leon Bignell is opposed to it, and the SA Jockey Club is opposed to it.

As long as jumps racing continues, it will continue to drag down not only the reputation of the entire horse racing industry.

I urge you to use whatever powers you have to remove jumps  racing from our South Australian racetracks for good.
