RSPCA sets new adoption record in South Australia

February 25, 2019

A total of 249 animals have now gone to new homes in what is a record for animal adoptions by RSPCA South Australia. (In last year’s inaugural Clear the Shelter campaign, 213 animals were adopted in SA.)

The majority of animals (164) were kittens, along with 57 cats, 18 dogs, one puppy, five goats, one guinea pig and three rabbits. Of the 249 animals adopted, 184 were from the Lonsdale shelter – all adopted for the significantly reduced fee of $29.

Just three goats and three cats remain available to adopt from the shelter.

The Lonsdale shelter has now closed for the day, and there are no more kittens available to adopt from RSPCA PetVille at Hillcrest today with the last two animals taken to new homes this afternoon.

Tim Charles, Head of Animal Operations, says today’s heat did not seem to deter people wanting to give animals a second chance and a new home.

“We’ve had people lined up outside our Lonsdale shelter before opening hours every day of this campaign, and our staff are just so grateful that so many people opened their hearts and homes for these animals.

“It has been a phenomenal success.”

While almost every adoption pen is now empty, behind the scenes RSPCA South Australia is still caring for over 450 animals. Of these, 366 are cats and kittens.

These animals are not yet ready to be adopted for a range of reasons including ongoing vet treatment, behavioural rehabilitation, foster care or they are the subject of animal welfare prosecutions. RSPCA also constantly has animals coming into care.

“We will of-course have more animals seeking new homes soon, but for now our shelter is just about empty,” Mr Charles said.

“We thank every one of the big-hearted people who has given these animals a second chance in life.”
